Congratulations to Roperhurst on winning Employer of the year at the inaugural Vale of Glamorgan Business Awards. Here’s what they had to say:

Why did you enter the VOG Business Awards?
To see where we were compared to other businesses following massive cultural changes with our organisation and to give recognition to the workforce who have embraced those changes to improve the day to day.

What did winning mean for you or your business?
For me personally….. a really good meal and night out, and an opportunity to bask in the glory that was mostly the work of other people in the organisation. For Roperhurst it was recognition from an external judging panel that the path we are on is not just the right path, but that we must have been reasonable competent in the execution of our agreed and set objectives.

What did you think of the awards ceremony?
I thought it was a brilliant night, great menu, well organised and the room also looked good too. Huge success, well done VOG.

What’s been a challenge for you or your business during the last year and how did you overcome it?

1) Employing new starters who are genuinely interested in working and building a career.  Whilst the problem is far from solved, we have implemented trial days as part of the recruitment process to ensure the candidates share our values and are the right fit to both complement and contribute to building our team to be the best it can be.

2) Getting paid by some of our clients who really believe we should be more grateful they are giving us the work.  For many this can be resolved by clear communication and robust processes, but there are always some who believe their supply chain consists solely of charities!

What’s been a highlight for you or your business over the last year and why?

1.A full order book for most of the year and a reasonable pipeline going forwards.

2.Witnessing our team continually produce first class fabrications and making even the difficult jobs look easy.

3.And of course not just being nominated but winning three major awards.
BESA Welsh Contractor of the Year awarded on 14thMay at The Vale Resort
VOG employer of the year awarded on 6thOctober also at The Vale Resort
BESA National Contractor of the Year awarded on 20thOctober in London at the Novotel West hotel.

What are your goals for 2023?

  1. More of the same please.
  2. Get paid on time every time by every client.
  3. Start to see a more stable supply chain
  4. Have fun!

What’s the best thing about running a business in the Vale?
Location, location, location.
